Beyond the Hustle: Embracing the Sabbath and the Great Trade
We live in a world that worships busyness. Our calendars are packed, our phones are constantly buzzing, and our to-the-do lists never truly end. It is incredibly easy to fall into the trap of negotiating with our schedules, convincing ourselves that if we just pull one more hour of work, our upcoming week will run smoothly. But God has a completely different design for our lives. In a recent message at Hundredfold Ministry, we walked through a profound truth found in Deuteronomy 5 and across the Gospels: God commands us to stop, step back, and protect our rest.
The Threefold Purpose of the Sabbath
When God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, the instruction regarding the Sabbath wasn’t a suggestion; it was a firm command. Deuteronomy 5:12 tells us to “Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.” When we break down this command, we discover a beautiful, three-step cycle designed to restore our souls:
- Rest: The primary, foundational purpose of the Sabbath day is pure rest. It means halting your labor—and ensuring those around you can rest, too—no matter how many problems are clamoring for your attention.
- Remember: True rest cures our spiritual amnesia. When we stop working, we gain the margin to remember where God brought us from, how He rescued us from bondage, and the immense goodness He has poured into our lives.
- Worship: Rest and remembrance naturally birth genuine worship. When you intentionally reflect on God’s mercy and the trials He has pulled you through, your heart can’t help but overflow with praise.
As Psalm 107 reminds us repeatedly, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” Your rest isn’t just empty time; it is an active celebration of God’s faithfulness.
Understanding "The Great Trade"
Honoring the Sabbath ultimately points us back to the cross and a concept we call “The Great Trade.” In Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus presents his disciples with a radical ultimatum regarding what it means to follow Him.
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” — Matthew 16:24-25
The cross is never a comfortable depiction. Following Christ requires us to embrace a path that includes denying our own pride, relinquishing selfishness, and even enduring suffering or rejection by the world. But think about the exchange taking place. Jesus asks us to lay down our old, broken, disappointing lives. In return, He gives us His glorious, perfected, eternal life. There is absolutely nothing this world offers—not a phone, a career, or any amount of wealth—that is worth trading for your soul.
Uncompromising Allegiance
When the enemy cannot pull you away from God directly, he often tries to use subtle relationship dynamics or cultural pressures to make you compromise. It is easy to find ourselves slipping into silence, twisting our allegiance because we are afraid of making a spouse, a friend, or a coworker feel uncomfortable.
We are called to be a light to this world, operating completely in love. Jesus warns us clearly against being ashamed of Him or His words in a sinful generation. Whether you are talking to a roommate, a classmate, or a colleague, be courageous enough to stand up and loudly declare that you belong to God.
